My friends and I
observed in SatreeThungsongschool. It’s located on 24 Thugsong-SuratThani RoadPakpraek,
ThungsongNakhon Si Thammarat province postal code80110.
The teacher that we observed name’s Richard Goad. He teaches in grade 11. We
have got good experiences from these 2 weeks a lot. In this section, we would
like to present information gained from observing. There are eight topics
answering teaching process from observing, including lesson structure,
classroom management strategies, types of teaching activities, teaching
strategies, uses of materials, teachers’ of language, students’ uses of
language, and students interaction.
In lesson structure, the
way lesson opens is greeting by saying “good morning”, check students’ name and
tells students directly about the topic of day. Today, they’re going to learn
about moods or feelings. He give an example of the topic by ask one student
“how do you feel when I have your phone?” It’s the good warm up step that lead
students to understand the content without explain the meaning. Students know
immediately about types of world that they’re going to learn. Then, the lesson
way to develop students to understand content is show picture cards and ask
someone to act like that word. Student can answer the most correctly and
participate in each activity. Teacher the lesson way by link the content into
the structure that has in real life. Moreover, there’re 3 activities include,
whole class, group work and individual activities. There’re several links and
transitions between activities such as asking questions, showing picture card,
acting the word represents.
In classroom management strategies, There are 3
types that teacher sets up group including, whole class, group and individual
work. Teacher divides group in short time in presentation and practice step.
There’re 4 rows. Each row represents one group. In the production step, students
make up group 6-7 people each group. Members of group are students who sit
nearly. He maintains order by speaking with loud, point and ask the most
students in many times. The class length is 110 minutes. There’re warm-up(15),
presentation(25), practice(25), production(25) and wrap-up(10). The seating
arrangements are in row and star shape. The row is the popular seating that
helps students can learn with partner and help together.
In types
of teaching activities, there are a variety of ways to make student interested
and memorize the knowledge that they’ve learn. Students did whole class
activities in warm up step. They tell the represent of flashcards. In practice
step, students drill with aloud voice together about function to ask moods or
feelings. Group activity is on the practice step that teacher provides student
to discuss the moods or feelings of people in flashcards. Nevertheless, there’s
individual task to helps them improve overall comprehensive from the class in
production step.
In teaching strategies, students present task by
focusing on speaking skill. They drill the structure repeat. It helps they are
fluent with that structure and feel confident to present task. For organizing
practice, students sit with pair in row shape. Teacher point to which role, it
turn of that team. So, each row had practice the structure more than times in a
sentence. If students pronounce wrong sounds, he did error corrections until
they do better. In teaching technique, Richard used CLT technique that start
from the vocabularies, structure and practicing by themselves. Students have to learning by their own
ways but teacher just gives only advice to students.
For
material that teacher use, there isn’t textbook in class; it’s only flashcards,
picture cards and whiteboard. Although, student didn’t learn from textbook; the
knowledge that they have learned is very good for use out class. The main
resource is the learning of students. It depends on ability to memorize which
they can collect.
For language that teacher use, he use the most
formal language and use informal language sometimes. Furthermore, teacher
reinforces students by usually asking questions. It’s important to motivate and
check comprehensive of students. Teacher will ask question repeat if there’s no
answer from students. The feedback from students, they always answer at once if
they know. If they don’t know, they will use more times to think and answer in
finally. When students don’t know answer, they will silent to consider. Teacher
will help student more clues. In the first activity, it’s an act and answer
moods or feelings. Teacher usually explains words with question and body
language. It’s good for learning with them. Moreover, teacher also explains
grammar by putting those words into sentences and showing to students that is
next step to use function in real life.
Using language of students is
an important for students to practice foreignerlanguage. While they doing group
work, students hardlyspeak English. They often use mother tongue during class.
Foreigner language was use only asking questions from teacher. Then, there was
problem with grammar because sentences that they use are the short sentence.
They seldom practice in correctly form and communicate with English. Students
also have the problem with pronunciation little. Sometimes, they pronounce
incorrect sound. But teacher will help students by pronounce correct
pronunciation and ask them to repeat after him.
In the step that teacher provides students,
there’re lots times to learn and practice. Students use the function sentences
many times and talk together in group work. Students sometimes ask questions
when they do group work and individual work. While they doing activities, they
speak mother language the most. They usually talk together with Thai.
We’ve
learned many techniques and real problem in observation classroom. We wouldn’t
understand if we don’t sit and observe in there. There’re several things that
we have to learn, practice and prepare ourselves. The problem can happens
wherever and whenever. Although, teacher is professional; there’re another
components that you need to manage. We’ve learned about controlling classroom, explaining
knowledge and creating positive classroom atmosphere. Because there’re lots of
components excepting teach. Teachers have to be the controller to flow
classroom activities and manage every task completed.
